Raphael Reproduction Pope Leo I & Attila Painting

Large oil on canvas painting after Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520).

Reproduction painting depicting his fresco “The Meeting of Leo I and Attila” (1513-1514). Titled here as “Pope Leo I Checking the Advances of Attila and his Huns.” With a metal plaque identifying the artwork. The number 2 is painted along the lower left corner. The original fresco is located in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. It is part of a series of rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello; this work is in the Stanza di Eliodoro, named after his fresco “The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple.”

Provenance: Joseph Burnett, Southborough, Massachusetts; Donated from previous to San Francisco State University, 1930, displayed in their library until the 1970s.
