Gertrude Barrer is frequently recognized as one of the most influential early abstract woman artists. She studied with Will Barnet at the Art Students League in New York, and quickly became involved in the up-and-coming abstract movements. She was an early Abstract Expressionist, and, with her artistic contemporaries Steve Wheeler and Peter Busa, was an important artist in the Indian Space movement. She exhibited with the SPIRAL association throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Along with creating art, she was co-founder and editor of ìIconograph,î a significant avant-garde arts publication.Unframed; height: 7 1/4 in x width: 11 in.
