Gene Kloss Mountainous Landscape Watercolor

Gene Kloss (American, 1903-1996).

Large watercolor on paper painting depicting a mountainous landscape. Signed along the lower right. Born in Oakland, California, in 1903, Gene Kloss grew up in the Bay Area, where she attended the University of California at Berkeley, and studied under Perham Nahl. She graduated in 1924 and studied for an additional two years at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. In 1925 she married Phillips Kloss, a poet and composer, and honeymooned in New Mexico. This was the first time Kloss spent time in the Southwest, and it sparked a lifelong passion for its landscape and culture. This watercolor reflects her love of the natural world.
