Juan Quezada Jr. Mata Ortiz Pottery Vase
Juan Quezada Jr. Mata Ortiz Pottery Vase

Juan Quezada Jr. (Mexican, b. 1971). Mata Ortiz (Casas Grandes) black and white vase. Artist signed along the underside. The Mata Oritz style developed by Quezada revives ancient pottery traditions from Casas Grandes (Paquime), a prehistoric archeological ruin near Chihuahua, Mexico. In this style, the pots are hand-formed without the use of pottery wheels. All materials – clay and paints – are natural and obtained locally from around the village. The pottery is dung-fired on the ground, not in a kiln, and each piece is signed by the artist.
