Maria Martinez (1887-1980) and Santana Roybal Martinez (1909-2002). San Ildefonso Pueblo blackware feather pot, ca. 1943-1954. Signed “Marie & Santana” along the underside. Maria Martinez is often seen as the godmother of Pueblo pottery. She is credited with the rediscovery of the method for making blackware pottery such as this piece, and received two honorary doctorates for her pottery work. She often worked with Santana Roybal Martinez, her daughter in law, who painted her pots through the 1940s and 1950s. Height: 3 3/4 in x diameter: 4 in.
