Janis Tidemanis was born in Latvia, but lived and worked throughout the world, studying art in Cleveland and New York, as well as in Belgium, where he was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Due to his time in Antwerp, his art was extremely influenced by Belgian Impressionism. He is most known for his still lifes, which, like this painting, often feature bright, jewel-like flowers against a dark background.
